Behind the Engineering of Oldelft Miniaturized TEE Probes

Oldelft Mini TEE Probe

How does one fit advanced 4D ultrasound imaging technology into a package small enough for a paediatric patient?

At Oldelft Ultrasound, miniaturization isn't just about making components smaller. It is a complex engineering challenge that balances physical limitations with the critical needs of clinicians in the operating room and ICU.

When designing our Mini 4D TEE probes, our R&D teams solve three core engineering challenges:

1. Thermal Dynamics & Patient Safety

An acoustic array with integrated active electronics generates heat. When you shrink the footprint of a probe, dissipating that heat becomes significantly harder. Our engineers utilize advanced proprietary materials and smart thermal management to ensure the probe remains perfectly safe for prolonged contact with delicate tissue, without compromising on signal power.

2. Acoustic Power in a Micro-Footprint

Fewer elements or smaller matrices can mean a compromise in image quality. To bypass this, Oldelft leverage state-of-the-art matrix array technology. “This allows us to pack thousands of microscopic acoustic elements into a tiny tip, delivering the crystal-clear, real-time 4D visualization clinicians need to guide complex structural heart interventions.” says Erwin Dumay, Managing Director at Oldelft.

3. Ergonomics & Multi-Way Manoeuvrability

A smaller probe tip demands an equally advanced and ultra-precise steering mechanism. Oldelft’s multi-directional deflection technology (2-way and 4-way) is engineered for exceptional micro-precision, enabling cardiologists to navigate with outstanding control and responsiveness. Despite the industry’s smallest shaft design, the probe remains highly flexible and gentle, helping to improve manoeuvrability while enhancing patient comfort during procedures.

For over 40 years, Oldelft has pushed the boundaries of transducer technology, partnering with the world’s leading ultrasound OEMs to make the impossible, clinical reality. Because when it comes to safeguarding the most vulnerable patients, every millimetre matters.
